When I was a young lad in the late sixties, early seventies, I became addicted to war comics. I loved the format, the fantastic artwork on the covers and the fact that there were so many of them. Mind you, I grew up in Sweden, so that was the scene I knew, but the output was generous enough to inspire a young lad to start a collection. This went on for a while and I managed to secure a few hundred copies all in all before the interest gradually waned and other things took over. But that box of comics stayed intact and when I moved it moved along with me and was lovingly, well, stashed away for safe keeping.

In 2003 I decided to create a swedish homepage about these comics in the hope that more information would surface if such a site existed. I had no idea if anybody at all would be interested but I had a go at it and after about six months or so positive feedback started to come in. I also realised that Commando was still being published and I decided to start a collection of UK war comics via eBay in 2004. Eventually new information started to come along and the scene in Finland was found to still be ongoing, so apart from Commando in the UK, that very title was still coming out (in pocket book format) as Korkeajännitys in the land of the thousand lakes as well. While the scene as a whole had gone away in the eighties across Europe, these two titles were still alive and kicking.

As an old rock journalist I realised that it would be good fun to interview editors, artists and writers that had either been, or was still active in the field. Luckily, Commando editor George Low opened that door and soon we could add Commando related interviews to the site. At this point, feedback from all over the world were coming in and I started to think about creating a site in english and sort of take it to another level if at all possible. WHERE EAGLES DARE is the result and I hope to build a respectable site given time. I hope that fans of these comics will find useful information and I hope to get in touch with editors and artists once (or currently) involved in this scene across Europe. Whoever you are, drop me a line if you feel like it. You can contribute in several ways to this site.

Lets strike a blow for an artform and a format that will forever stand out - certainly in our minds. Lets accept that it can be nice to be part of an old boys club. And if there ever was such a club, this is surely it.
